New Restaurant Openings in Austin for 2017
One of the things we love most about Austin’s food scene is its eclectic variety. While most people outside of Texas assume that all we eat is Tex-Mex and BBQ, anyone who lives Austin knows differently. There is something for every taste and palate in this great city.
As for 2017, the foodie community is looking forward to a full list of new eateries scheduled to open in the coming months. From Asian fusion to punk rock dining, it’s going to be a great year. Keep an eye out for the following restaurants and their grand openings:
Bombshell
This new eatery scheduled to open in the spring is one of the most intriguing new options for 2017. Former Swiss Attic and Geraldine’s chef Callie Speer has announced that her new punk rock-inspired diner will be offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks in the West Sixth Street area.
We don’t quite understand what Speer has in mind with her punk rock inspiration, but it should be fun nonetheless. Bombshell might be the perfect place for light meals or late-night drinks among the younger crowd who like hard-driving music and the party that goes with it.
PS 35
If you’re into a more relaxed dining environment that concentrates on Italian cuisine, you might be inclined to try PS 35 when it opens in March. Owner Clint Elmore, known for his 40 North pizza trailer, will be bringing his new restaurant to Round Rock. Enjoy his well-known pizza along with a complete list of family-style Italian dishes. Top it all off with soft serve in a relaxed dining environment that includes a DJ and pinball machines.
Veggie Heaven
Vegetarian Chinese is the cuisine of choice for Veggie Heaven on W. 5th St. Feast on a menu of vegetarian favorites including veggie burgers, tofu fries, and vegetarian ramen. If you’re already familiar with Veggie Heaven, you’ll be right at home in their new location. The big difference here is that ownership is including a full bar.
Bonhomie
Bonhomie is a French word that means ‘good-natured, cheerful, and congenial’. A new restaurant by the same name is slated to open very shortly on Burnet Road in the AMLI building. Chef Philip Speer intends to make Bonhomie a relaxed French-American bistro that offers some of his most loved creations.
The Brewers Table
Coming in April is The Brewers Table, a new eatery that has already enjoyed some success by way of a couple of pop-ups operated last year. The key to this enterprise is a menu that incorporates common ingredients into both its food and its beer. The restaurant will also feature wood-fired cooking – a trend that is big in Austin right now.
LeRoy & Lewis
Former Freedmen’s pit master Evan LeRoy is already well known throughout Austin for his barbecue. He’s joining forces with Nathan and Sawyer Lewis to create a new restaurant that will include an on-site brewery and event space. LeRoy & Lewis will offer various cuts of meat along with side dishes created using ingredients from its own sustainable garden and other local sources.
If you don’t want to wait for the spring opening of LeRoy & Lewis, you can check out LeRoy’s famous meats by way of his food truck. But beware, that will only leave you anticipating the new restaurant even more!
We have just scratched the surface on new restaurants slated to open in Austin this year. Suffice it to say you could spend all year trying different joints and still not cover them all. That’s just what the food scene in Austin is like.
